WHY AN EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE PROGRAMME?

National Occupational Health and Safety Commission recommends you consider the benefits of an EAP.

“Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) can help manage stress at work and at home. These programs are set up to handle personal and emotional problems which are interfering with work performance. Stress from outside the workplace such as family illness or death, marital problems or financial concerns can all interfere with our work lives. An EAP will not solve these problems but it can give you advice on managing these stressful situations.”

Mensline statistics

A survey (Feb 2003) conducted by Mensline into the impact of family and relationship difficulties for men on the workplace identified, of the 90% of men who acknowledged relationship difficulties having a detrimental impact on work performance,

  • 41% rated the impact as severe.
  • 78% reported distraction and inability to concentrate
  • 61% reported depression and isolating behaviour
  • 45% acknowledged taking time off work because they could not cope
  • 57% reported anger and fighting with coworkers
  • 16% reported involvement with mishaps or accidents
  • 18% decide to quit their job

Employer Cost of Emotional Factors
  • Emotional factors account for 61% of time lost through absenteeism;
  • Research indicates 10-20% of the population suffer depression
  • Conservatively 15% of the workforce may be emotionally troubled = productivity loss of 20% per employee.
  • If one person costs $40000 pa = $8000 pa is lost productivity = $154 per person per week/cost to business.
  • Translating into overall annual lost productivity to the employer, a workforce of 30 employees would cost:
  • 30 employees @ $40000 = $1.2m @ 15% @ 20% = $36000 pa = 3% of annual payroll or $692 /week

  • Female workers account for 58.3% of work-related stress claims, with the frequency rate of claims being almost 2.5 times the rate of work related stress claims for male workers in 1998/99.
  • Lost-time work-related stress claims have remained relatively high in the industry classifications of education, health and community services, and government administration, in 1998/99.
